List of Fullmetal Alchemist episodes

The episodes from the anime Fullmetal Alchemist are based on Fullmetal Alchemist manga by Hiromu Arakawa.[1] Set in a fictional universe in which alchemy is one of the most advanced scientific techniques known to man, the story follows Edward and Alphonse Elric, two alchemist brothers, who want to recover parts of their bodies lost in an attempt to bring their mother back to life through alchemy.

Fullmetal Alchemist was first aired on the Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) in Japan from October 4, 2003 to October 2, 2004. It later aired on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block in the United States from November 6, 2004 and its remake, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, is still airing on Saturdays at 1:00 AM.[2][3] A theatrical release titled Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa, a sequel to the television series, premiered in Japanese theaters on July 23, 2005;[4] and it premiered in the U.S. on August 24, 2006.[5] A series of five original video animations (OVAs) were also released. The majority of these OVAs are side stories and do not expand on the plot.[6] In 2009, a new anime, named Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood for the English release started broadcast in TV Tokyo being directed by Yasuhiro.[7][8][9]

The first series has been released in a series of thirteen DVDs from December 17, 2003 to January 26, 2005 in Japan.[10] Funimation also released the same series of DVDs from February 8, 2005 to September 12, 2006 in the United States.[11][12] MVM had released the first eight volumes in the United Kingdom; however, Funimation gave the rights over to Revelation Films.[13] In March 2006 a DVD featuring the OVAs was released in Japan with the name of Fullmetal Alchemist: Premium Collection.[10] Funimation acquired and dubbed the Premium Collection, which was released on August 4, 2009.[14] During January from 2009, Bones released a "DVD box archives" of the anime. It includes the first anime of 51 episodes, the film, the CD soundtracks, and guidebooks from the series.[15]

Eight pieces of theme music are used for the episodes—four opening themes and four ending themes. Each of the theme songs were performed by artists under Sony Music Entertainment Japan's label, whose anime distribution unit, Aniplex, handled the production and music production for the series. The music score was composed and arranged by Michiru Oshima.[16] "Melissa" by Porno Graffitti is used during episodes 2–13, "Ready Steady Go" by L'Arc-en-Ciel follows it until episodes 25, "Undo" by Cool Joke is used until episode 41, and "Rewrite" by Asian Kung-Fu Generation is used until episode 51. For episode 1, the ending is "Melissa" by Porno Graffitti. "Kesenai Tsumi" (消せない罪?, "Indelible Sin") by Nana Kitade is used for episodes 2-13, "Tobira no Mukō e (扉の向うへ?, "Beyond the Door") by Yellow Generation is used for episodes 14-24, episodes 26-41 use "Motherland" by Crystal Kay for the ending, and "I Will" by Sowelu is used for episodes 42-50. All episodes that originally opened with "Melissa" and "Undo" had "Ready Steady Go" shown in place of those songs on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim and YTV's Bionix. The DVD releases from Funimation include all openings in their original places and format.

01 "Those Who Challenge the Sun"
"Taiyō ni Idomu Mono" (太陽に挑む者)
October 4, 2003[17] November 6, 2004[18]
In a brief flashback two young boys, Edward and Alphonse Elric, attempt to perform an alchemical transmutation in the hopes of bringing their late mother back to life. Something goes horribly wrong. Alphonse disappears, Edward is seen missing his left leg, and a grotesque figure appears out of the Transmutation Circle. The scene switches to the current day and the brothers are seen walking across a desert. They arrive at Lior, where they hear about a religious leader named Father Cornello who can invoke miracles. Rose, a young woman who works for Cornello, takes the brothers to meet him. When they see Cornello perform a "miracle," they realize he is performing alchemy, but is ignoring the Law of Equivalent Exchange and think that the gem that Cornello has is the Philosopher's Stone, which they had been searching for to attempt to return Alphonse's body to him. Feeling the pressure from the brothers, Cornello orders his right-hand man, Cray, to kill them. Cray, however, fails, since Al has no body, and Rosé, scared for her life after witnessing Cray shoot Al to no effect, runs to Cornello. Al and Ed chase after her, and Cornello sics a chimera on them after when they arrive. Ed fends both it and another chimera back with his automail (his metal arm and leg) as they are exposed, with Cornello realizing the source of Ed's nickname: "The Fullmetal Alchemist", and that the brothers have committed the ultimate sin: a human transmutation.
02 "Body of the Sanctioned"
"Kinki no Karada" (禁忌の身体)
October 11, 2003 November 13, 2004[18]
The brothers reveal that they were trying to revive their mother and they warn Rosé that reviving her boyfriend, Cain, would result in a similar fate. Cornello then attacks them, and they barely escape. To comfort Rosé, Cornello shows her a silhouette of Cain. He then orders the townspeople to attack and capture the Elrics; Ed transmutes some metal to look like Al, and allows himself to be captured, Cornello then takes Ed's State Alchemist's pocket-watch, thinking it is Ed's secret to performing alchemy without a transmutation circle. Cornello catches Rosé trying to visit Cain and he reveals the silhouette to be a chimera made of birds. He leaves her to be eaten by the chimera, but Al arrives just in time to save her. When Cornello tells Ed his plan to use Lior as the base for world domination, Al broadcasts it across town. Ed then defeats Cornello with his superior alchemy, but Cornello's Philosopher's Stone turns out to be a fake. When Rosé confronts Ed and Al about how their exposing Cornello did more harm then his deception, Ed tells her to walk on her own two feet. As the Elrics leave, Lust and Gluttony manage to salvage their plans with Liore by killing Cornello and replacing him with Envy masquerading as the "real" Cornello.
03 "Mother..."
"Okāsan..." (おかあさん…)
October 18, 2003 November 20, 2004[18]
In a flashback that continues through to episode nine, Ed and Al learn alchemy from a very young age, taking after their father, who apparently abandoned his family when Al was still too young to remember him. They show their alchemy to both their friend, Winry Rockbell, and their mother, Trisha Elric. Trisha encourages them in the pursuits of alchemic knowledge, but she dies from a sudden illness and the brothers vow to revive her with alchemy. They apprentice themselves to an unnamed alchemist, and after their training, they attempt to resurrect Trisha. The transmutation goes awry and Ed loses his left leg, and Al his entire body. Ed then sacrifices his right arm to attach Al’s soul to a suit of armor, and Al carries Ed’s broken bleeding body to Rockbell Automail. Roy Mustang arrives unexpectedly, having received a letter the boys sent to his office, inquiring about their father, Hohenheim. Having seen the attempted Human-Transmutation, Mustang tries to recruit the boys to become State Alchemists, but Pinako Rockbell orders him to leave. Ed pays Pinako for automail limbs and decides to become a State Alchemist so he that can gain Privileged Access to the State’s Library, and find a way to restore Al's body (Al in turn promises to restore Ed's arm and leg). Ed and Al burn down their childhood home so that they don't give up and try to return and leave Resembool.

"Ai no Rensei" (愛の錬成)
October 25, 2003 November 27, 2004[18]
On their way to Central City, Ed and Al stop at a train station where they hear of an alchemist named Majhal (whose name had appeared several times in their father's correspondences relating to Human-Transmutation) who lives in the area, and decide to pay him a visit. Upon entering Majhal's village, they encounter a girl named Clause (whose appearance fools Ed and Al into thinking she's a boy) who tells them that a zombie has been murdering several of the villagers, her older sister being one of them. Clause petitions the brothers to avenge her sister's death, but Ed is skeptical of the whole situation. Upon meeting Majhal, he tells the brothers that the mysterious zombie is believed to be a florist by the name of Karin, Majhal's former lover, who died in an accident several years ago. After some more investigation, the brothers discover that Majhal has been attempting to revive Karin by using mannequins that look like her, and using alchemy to attach the souls of the village girls he's kidnapped to the mannequins, kidnapping Clause to use her soul. Ed discovers that Karin had not died, but initially lost her memories and has aged. Once her memories returned, she had sought out Majhal, but he was already possessed by his passions of reviving Karin to recognize her. Majhal refuses to accept the wrinkled old woman, who has been supporting him, as Karin, and attempts to kill Ed. In self-defense, Ed knocks Majhal's weapon out of his hand, which flies into the air and accidentally impales Majhal, killing him. Clause reverts to dressing femininely and sees the brothers off as they continue on their journey.

Edward and Alphonse are told by Mustang to board the train that is currently leaving the station. Their train is hijacked by a group of terrorists led by a man named Bald. They take General Haruko, who happens to be on the train, and his family captive and demand that their leader is released from prison. Ed and Al fight back, however, and meet Major Maes Hughes, who helps them defeat Bald and rescue the General. The train arrives safely at the station and the military moves in to arrest the terrorists. Bald manages to escape, but Mustang demonstrates his abilities as "The Flame Alchemist" and restrains Bald. Mustang then informs Ed that the grateful General Hakuro has given Ed special permission to take the State Alchemist Examination, which surprises and annoys Ed because of the implication that Mustang manipulated him.
06 "The Alchemy Exam"
"Kokka Renkinjutsushi Shikaku Shiken" (国家錬金術師資格試験)
November 8, 2003 December 11, 2004
Ed and Al begin preparing for the State Alchemy Exam while lodging with Shou Tucker, "The Sewing-Life Alchemist," who is well-known for creating intelligent chimeras, including one that could speak the human language (but died shortly after it was created). The brothers become fast friends with Tucker's young daughter, Nina, and her dog, Alexander. The Elrics' cramming is only interrupted when Hughes and his wife, Gracia, throw a birthday party for Ed. During the party, Gracia goes into labor and they witness the birth of Elicia. Ed discovers at this time that he can perform alchemy without a Transmutation Circle. After the written portion of the test, Mustang forces Al to drop out so Al's lack of a body due to the attempted Human-Transmutation is not revealed. Ed successfully passes the interview and passes the practical portion "with flying colors" when he saves the entire prospective State Alchemist group with his quick thinking, courage, and ability to transmute without a Circle.
07 "Night of the Chimera's Cry"
"Kimera ga Naku Yoru" (合成獣が哭く夜)
November 15, 2003 December 18, 2004
Ed, having passed the State Alchemy Exam, now is a "dog of the military." Mustang gives Edward a silver pocket watch, a symbol of Ed's rank and an alchemical amplifier. Edward writes a letter to Winry, his childhood friend, and Nina writes one to her mother, who left Tucker two years ago and hasn't been responding to Nina's letters. After Tucker's reluctance in answering Ed's questions concerning the talking Chimera that he created two years ago, Ed investigates at the Library, but is denied access. On the way out of the Library, Ed encounters a mysterious man with a "X"-shaped scar across his face, and a strange tattoo on his right arm. After Brigadier General Basque Gran finds out about Ed's investigations, he orders him to cease and desist, and that Ed and Al have to move out of Tucker's mansion. Ed, on a hunch, sneaks into the mansion with Al at night, and they head down to Tucker's lab in the basement, where he has just finished creating another speaking chimera in order to satisfy his yearly examination requirements. Ed then verbally places the pieces of the puzzle together and reveals to Al that Tucker used his wife for his first chimera, and the new one was created using Nina and Alexander. Tucker accuses Ed of being guilty of the same thing, and Ed nearly beats him to death, stopped only by the Nina-Alexander chimera. The scarred man is gone and all that remains of Nina-Alexander is a blood-smear.
08 "The Philosopher's Stone"
"Kenja no Ishi" (賢者の石)
November 22, 2003 January 1, 2005
Anguished by the horrible demise of Nina, and disgusted at his first assignment of organizing Tucker's research after learning of the man's death, Ed considers deserting to track down her killer. Al, however, finds reference to the philosopher's stone among Tucker's papers, and evinces an interest in it to Ed. Ed is incredulous that it exists and wants nothing to do with it. Left to his own devices, Al has spoken to the Fuhrer about the philosopher's stone, and the Fuhrer encouraged him to pursue it. Winry, who has arrived at Central to visit Ed and Al, is kidnapped by a butcher-turned-serial killer named Barry the Chopper, who disguises himself as a woman. Ed, falling for Barry's deception, gets kidnapped and his automail arm taken from him as he tries to free Winry and run away. Forced into a fight for his life, Edward almost killed Barry in an act of maddened deperation until Al arrived to stop him. The authorities take Barry away as Ed breaks down and cries in front of Al. Al again mentions the philosopher's stone, and now Ed agrees to search for it. He demands from Mustang to be allowed to search for it, and Mustang agrees, with the caveat that he be kept abreast of developments. King Bradley officially gives Ed his state alchemist name: "Fullmetal."

Lieutenant Yoki, the military commander in charge of the area, appears and tries to collect taxes from the inn but a riot erupts and Yoki nearly kills Kyle, the inn owners son before Ed appears and saves Kyle's life. Noticing that Ed is a state alchemist, Ed is invited to Yoki's mansion, where he is both flattered and bribed. At night, the inn blows up, presumably by Yoki's orders, and Al saves Kyle from under the rubble. Upon discovering the ruined inn, Ed reluctantly transmutes the gold coins that Yoki attempted to bribe him with, overlaying the gold over coal bars. He then uses them to purchase the mine from Yoki under the guise of a moneyless transfer before returning the bars to stone and selling the entire town to the people of Youswell for a single night stay at the newly repaired inn, which he repaired. Yoki tries to fight back, but Ed easily defeats his alchemist servant, Lyra, and becomes known as the hero of the people.

The Chief of Police hopes to fight fire with fire by using Ed to catch Psiren. Three times, Psiren tricks Ed and Al into thinking that she steals for the good of the people; saving certain buildings from being torn down. But each time, the building gets demolished anyway and Psiren gets away with it. Alphonse, still believing that Psiren is really a good person, tries to stop Ed from catching Psiren before she gets away with the loot. They sneak into Mugiar's mansion to meet the impostors, but the older impostor is very skilled at alchemy and the real Elric brothers are forced to retreat. In the morning, Al goes to buy medicine for Elisa but is unable to do so because everybody in the town believes him to be an impostor. When Russell refuses, Mugiar reveals that he knows the Tringhams are not the real Elrics and captures them. Back at the tavern, Ed and Al learn about Nash Tringham, Russell and Fletcher's father. The original discoverer of the red water, Nash soon left the city and was never seen again after the townspeople began to develop a disease following his research. In addition to learning about Nash Tringham, they also learn about a man called Doctor Marcoh, who treated this deadly disease with a mysterious method (possibly the philosopher's stone). This sparks a great interest in Ed and Al. The next day, the real Elric brothers are invited to research the red water by Mugiar. They agree, free the Tringhams, and corner Mugiar by asking about Nash. Mugiar responds by attacking the Elrics using the partial stone. With the help of the Tringhams, the Elrics overpower Mugiar, but he escapes to an underground lair. However, Mugiar collapses the underground passage, causing the red water to flood out of the spring. Fletcher, using his alchemy, makes the trees absorb the red water, neutralizing the threat. The premise is a wrap party for Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa, where the characters from both the theatrical release and the series are turned into chibi forms. Hawkeye announces the party has begun, and several characters try to get the mic. Ed and Al try to stop them but is trampled by ten dogs who all look like Black Hayate, Hawkeye's dog. Hawkeye begins with a denouncement of Mustang, saying that she would have given up the whole series if she was paired into a couple with him. Two suits of armor go next and reveal they are Scar and Lust, who are mad that they only got a cameo in the movie. Scar rips off his X-shaped scar and propels it across the room at Ed and Al, but misses and strikes Gluttony who proceeds to eat everyone. Ed meets Heidrich, and Al changes his voice to Heidrich's to insult Edward. Ed and Al then deal with a drunk Winry, who's furious at Ed because she thinks he's in a relationship with Noah.

In the underground city, Greed has captured Ed, Al and Winry, although Winry is revealed to be Envy in disguise and easily defeats Greed. Envy then lures the brothers into a trap set by the other homunculi: Lust, Gluttony, Sloth, and Wrath. The fight leads to a ballroom where Mustang shows up, along with his troops and reinforcements including Frank Archer, Armstrong, Kimblee, and other state alchemists. A large battle follows which ends when the viewer activates an alchemy ring received from Mustang.
